Looking back at over 25 years in business, Ed reminiscences,

“It’s been very hard at times, we’ve had successes and we’ve had failures, but we’ve helped thousands create joyous memories. That is what makes all this worth it.”

In 1977, Ed was catering at Surrey Inn in Ashland. Years later, when Ed was asked to cater the wedding of a prominent local figure, he knew he had found the career he was meant for. Working there, and a few other jobs, Ed knew he wanted to own his own catering business. That dream came true in 1992, when he opened Ed Pickens’ catering in the Barrington One building. In addition to catering, Ed offered daily soups, sandwiches, and salads. In 2001, Ed was able to upgrade to a commercial kitchen and offer full service catering. Ed continued to grow his business as much as the building would allow. In 2008, Ed found a simple solution: move down the street. The spacious new location in the old Reed’s building had a large commercial kitchen, enough room for parties of up to 250, and even a gormet presentation kitchen. It was perfect, but, in 2014, disaster struck. The cold winter took a toll on the old pipes, causing them to burst and flood. Even when another plumbing fiasco caused damage weeks later, Ed persevered. He knew that his luck would eventually change. Ed continued to receive praises for his catering jobs, but changing downtown lunch traffic took a toll on the cafe. Even though it was a tough call to make, the decision to close the walk in restaurant allowed Ed to focus on catering and use the space for more events. What makes Ed Pickens’ catering the best in the business? Ed has devoted over 35 years to making his food and service the best in town. Not only does he set a high standard of service and professionalism, Ed’s food comes from a “made from scratch” kitchen. No prepackaged salads and entrees here.

Ed offers a wide variety of custom made desserts

Ed doesn’t simply provide food, he does everything in his power to give the customer a stress-free experience. The average customer has no idea how much work goes into safely and successfully catering an event. Food transport, safety, and coordination is of the utmost importance. Ed reflects on the growing challenges of the industry, “a lot has changed over the years. People are doing events bigger and better. Graduation parties are no longer just cake and punch. Every bride wants her wedding to be the biggest and best. My job is to do whatever I can to make you happy on your special day.” Formally “Ed Pickens’ Cafe on Main”, Ed Pickens’ Events and Catering has been re-branded with a new website and name change, but what’s next for Ed?
