West View Healthy Living
In 1956, the Brethren Church’s dream to house the widowed and aging became a reality. A farmhouse a few miles north of Wooster on Route 3 was converted into a 10 room home to offer basic residential nursing care. In the 60s, over 25 acres of land on Mechanicsburg Rd was donated to the church for a larger facility to be constructed. In 1962, West View Manor opened with two wings of residential care and a communal dining room. This brand-new facility laid the foundation for the variety of care West View offers today.
In the mid-80s, the campus expanded greatly. Villas for independent living and skilled nursing facilities were now available. As time progressed, and resources allowed, the facilities grew to keep up with the demand from the community. Fast forward to 2005, and Town Square opened its doors. This 50,000 square foot assisted living center was designed to resemble a small town; featuring amenities such as a post office, chapel, beauty salon, movie theater, and more. This new neighborhood within the West View campus was built for residents with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. The campus expanded again in 2018 when construction began for the event center as well as twenty rooms in the therapy wing and fifteen indepenent living units.
Each expansion was designed with the concept of continuing care retirement contingency, or aging in place. Residents can move from wing to wing depending on their specific needs. President and CEO, Bonnie Hall explains,
“We’ve had residents come to us for short-term care and transition to assisted living or memory care. They move down the hall instead of across the county or even state. By staying on the same campus, it’s easier on both the residents and their families. We have also had couples that need different levels of care. They’re able to stay on the same campus while recieving the specific care they need.”
The grounds are also home to the West View Wellness Center and the Connection Conference and Event Center. The Wellness Center is a true extension of the West View mission: taking care of the mind, body, and whole health. The Wellness Center is open to the public for anyone over the age of 40, and memberships include access to the gym, pool, and fitness classes. Having the center on site also allows for residents in the transitional care unit to be able to use the facility for rehabilitation and come back to use the same gym they’ve been using in their therapy, giving them a better chance for success. Similar to the Wellness Center, the Connection Conference and Event Center is open to the public. All proceeds from rentals (weddings, events, meetings, etc.) are poured right back into West View.
Beyond caring for the physical needs of their residents, West View Healthy Living developed a program aimed at helping each resident cross something off their bucket list. The Dream On program started with a resident named Liz. She was about to turn 104 and longed to celebrate her birthday in style, riding around town in a limo to get ice cream with her friends. What seemed like a far fetched dream would soon become reality when the team at West View spread the word and private donations came in for the limo and Hartzler’s donated ice cream. The day meant the world to Liz, but it impacted the whole West View team. From taking residents to see their family farm again, to seeing the Cleveland Orchestra perform, to everything in between; the Dream On program continues to make a lasting impression in the community. When her father (Jim) dreamt to revisit the campground he ran, Sandy M. was blown away by the experience, “It was heartwarming to see how my dad lit up upon seeing the camp and reliving the memories and accomplishments he had from his time there.”
West View Healthy Living has always been a non-profit organization with one main goal: to wholly care for their residents. The majority of support is raised through private donations and two major fundraising events; Night on the Hill and the annual West View golf outing. Proceeds from Wellness Center and Connection Conference and Event Center come back to West View Healthy Living to support the senior living communities.
