Brown Family Eyecare
As a child, Dr. Kevin Brown spent time playing eye doctor with his brothers at his dad’s optometry practice, dreaming of one day following in his father’s footsteps. He never imagined how his reality would one day exceed his childhood dream. Dr. Donald Brown, affectionately known as “Brownie”, graduated from The Ohio State University College of Optometry in 1970. After serving two years in the Army, he and his wife, Chip, then moved to Mansfield, had 3 boys and started an optometry practice.
Three Generations of Doctors Dr. Donald, Dr. Jacob, & Dr. Kevin
After graduating high school, Kevin completed optometry school at Ohio State and went on to serve in the Air Force. He and his wife, Susie spent a few years traveling in the service before starting their family. With two year old active twins and another baby on the way, the Browns made the decision to move back to Mansfield. The Browns were thrilled to get back to their roots with friends and family nearby, and Dr. Kevin was eager to join his father’s growing practice.
The Lexington Avenue office is celebrating 50 years of serving the Mansfield community and it has always been a Brown Family affair. “I grew up in this place, from playing in exam rooms to riding bikes in the parking lot. My childhood is full of memories made in this building.
The Lexington Avenue location has been completely renovated inside and out.
Twenty years later, my kids were also making memories here. What’s been the most rewarding has been serving families in the same manner. We have multi-generational families of patients where we have seen grandparents, parents, and now their children, too.”
Recently there has been another Dr. Brown to graduate from The Ohio State University College of Optometry. Dr. Jacob Brown is Kevin’s oldest son and now the third generation of the Brown legacy. In conjunction with bringing on Jacob, Brown Family Eyecare has completely renovated their office at 1260 Lexington Ave inside and out. Jacob explains, “We wanted to bring life and shine a light to our surrounding community and every patient that visits. We relied on local contractors and are thrilled with the transformation. The updates make our practice better for both our team and our patients. It doesn’t feel like a normal doctor’s office, it feels like home.”
Jacob brings more than just the reputable Brown name with him to the practice. Dr. Jacob’s specialty during his residency was vision therapy. He explains, “It is an alternative treatment where we can help those struggling with a variety of eye conditions or injuries to improve function by training their eyes and brain. It’s a similar concept to how a physical therapist helps individuals retrain their body to treat a specific injury or issue. I recently worked with a nine year old girl who was struggling in school. She was a bright student, but falling behind when it came to reading. After being diagnosed with an eye coordination condition, we started vision therapy.
The Lexington Avenue location has been completely renovated inside and out.
After several months of treatments she was no longer having headaches when she read and was seeing improvements at school.” The field of vision therapy is growing and can be beneficial for patients with visual perceptual learning disabilities and other vision related neurological conditions including concussions, strokes, and other related brain injuries. Brown Family Eyecare is excited to bring this new type of treatment to the Mansfield area.
“To make a difference in the lives of others with a team of people that are like family, in a place where my father and I worked together. Now I get to work alongside my son and serve our community. This is a real dream come true and I thank God for it every day.”

New technology and treatments are great, but it’s always the people who make the place. Dr. Kevin explains, “Our staff is both experienced and a joy to work with. To make a difference in the lives of others with people that are like family, in a place where my father and I worked together. Now I get to work alongside my son and serve our community. This is a real dream come true and I thank God for it every day.” If you or someone you know need help with vision or have questions about vision therapy, visit Brown Family Eyecare at 1260 Lexington Ave in Mansfield or call 419-756-8204 for an appointment.
