HealthMarkets Don Walton
Before becoming an insurance agent, Don Walton built a career driving trucks. Even with a great salary, he knew something was missing. With a wife and 3 daughters at home, he was constantly on the road. Don missed concerts, school functions, family dinners, and even first steps. He knew there had to be a better way to provide for his family. While on a vacation in Alaska, Don was looking out over the Harding Icefields and experienced a moment of clarity like never before. He explains, “At the time I didn’t have much control over my life and schedule. I knew I needed to make a change and finish my degree. I needed to find something that allowed me to be around to watch my daughters grow up.”

Don and his wife, Alyssa, were both born and raised in Wooster and knew this is where they wanted to raise their family. His entire life, Don admired local businessmen. He noticed their investment in the community, sponsoring events and local sports teams. It was Don’s home and auto insurance agent that encouraged him to get his degree in risk management. It wasn’t until Don was researching health insurance for his own family that his eyes were opened to the lack of local representatives in the industry. He remembers his experience, “I was unsure who to trust. There were so many websites selling different plans. I was overwhelmed and was getting bombarded with calls all hours of the day from all over the globe.
I didn’t know if people were trying to sell me coverage based on what’s best for my family or what is best for a their company.” Don knew he couldn’t be alone in his frustration. He obtained his license, gaining a full understanding of the industry. His next step was finding the right company to partner with. His search led him to HealthMarkets Insurance Agency. It was the best fit for Don, his family, and his clients as it granted him access to plans from nationally recognized carriers.

According to Don, the first 8 months were brutal. He thought about quitting, but he had clients depending on him. As the business grew, Don knew that this was the career he was meant for. He opened a new office on Liberty Street in downtown Wooster, allowing him to partner with individuals and small business owners. Smaller companies are finding that offering health insurance is a great way to attract and retain top talent and employees. Don’s goal is to educate individuals on the complicated industry while connecting them with the insurance plan that best suits their needs. When asked about the enrollment process, Don explains, “I need to hear who your doctors are, what hospitals and medications you use, and make sure your plan fits in with your current needs.
The number one question I get is, ‘How do I know what plan is best for my family, or what all of this even means?’” Networks and medication coverage can change year to year. Don aims to educate each person to help his friends and neighbors find a plan that meets their needs and budget. If you are unable to stop in during normal business hours, Don can accommodate any schedule, even if you are unable to leave your home. You can find Don Walton at 127 East Liberty Street, Suite 203, in downtown Wooster.
