Mary Anne’s Meat Market

Mary Anne's Meat Market

As Fresh As You Can Get

As a seven-year-old child, Mary Anne Kettering’s favorite game to play with her siblings was grocery store. Whenever the four siblings would play, she would always choose to be the butcher. She loved to wear the apron and arrange the small plastic toy meats. According to Mary Anne, this is where it all started. Growing up, Mary Anne was fond of hunting, fishing, and trapping. Not afraid of getting her hands dirty, she wrapped freezer beef on the kitchen table of the family farm in Northern Richland County. Mary Anne fished often; some of the fish she and her family caught were smoked in a homemade smokehouse her father built. She also gathered food from the family’s acre garden.
This strong work ethic would later help Mary Anne grow her business to what it is today.

At the young age of twelve, Mary Anne started in the meat industry and has been cutting meat for 38 years. She gained experience in the industry by working for a variety of local butchers. Before opening her own business, she spent time with Weidle’s Meats in Mansfield, Gwirtz Foods in Shelby, and Heffelfinger Meats in Jeromesville. She also completed the two year meat processing course at Pioneer Career Center, Mary Anne would later fill in as an instructor for this same course.

In 2002, Mary Anne purchased property at 25 West Main street in Lexington, OH and transformed it into a deer processing facility. For the next five years, as the business grew, Mary Anne continued to save her earnings until she was able to convert the deer processing facility to a full scale meat market in March of 2007.

Mary Anne and her husband Charles Kettering live on the family farm in Ashland County where they raise approximately 500 head of beef cattle. Their cattle include Black Angus, Angus and Limosine Cross, and are all born and raised at the family farm. The cattle are raised in the traditional manner, they are out to pasture and all feed is grown on the farm. Their cattle are never fed hormones, nor are they implanted.

“The food put into our bodies is very important, and local, high quality products are key. Over 90% of all products we sell are locally raised. They are fresh, and most likely came from our farm or a farmer close to your home.”

The meat market offers a wide selection of fresh local beef, pork, poultry, and lamb. All carcass cattle is dry aged 10-14 days to ensure the most tender product.

Mary Anne’s offers a selection of Ohio Maple syrup, local honey, and other quality local grocery products. In the fall of 2015, Mary Anne purchased the Weidel’s sausage recipes & now makes and carries smoked garlic sausage and other longtime Weidel specialty sausages. After nine plus years of business, Mary Anne’s Meat Market has grown exponentially, increasing sales every year. When asked how she does it, Mary Anne thoughts return to her customers, “We love our customers. They are great people, beyond that, they have become friends. It is truly our privilege to serve them and we really want to say thank you! Thank you for the last 9+ years, and thank you for every day you come in to
see us!”
