Emanuel Miller’s earliest memories are from helping out on the family farm. He grew up learning the value of hard work and the joy of doing what you love. When Emanuel and Barbara got married, they continued the family tradition and started farming on a smaller scale.

Moreland Farms uses horses, not heavy machinery, to plow their fields.

Years later, Emanuel started a roofing company and despite his success, found himself working long hours away from his family. Not wanting his kids to grow up without having their dad around, Emanuel reached a decision point. He remembers, “It’s hard to give up something that was doing well, but being there for Barbara and the kids became my top priority. I wanted to return to my roots, get my hands in the dirt, and have some freedom and flexibility. I can walk the kids to school every morning instead of spending all day at a construction site. Those little moments make a big impact on the children.”

When Emanuel gave up his roofing business, he returned to full time farming on his 13 acre property in Fredericksburg. It wasn’t a lot of land to work with, but he was back to doing what he’s loved since he was a child. Looking into the future, Emanuel and Barbara wanted to find a bigger property and build a legacy for their 14 children. Moreland Fruit Farm started in the 1920s and, despite changing hands over the years, has always been a staple in the community. Emanuel heard through the grapevine that previous owner Fred Finney was thinking about selling his farm, but didn’t have a chance to make an offer before it was sold. A month later, the new owners came to visit Emanuel at his home and gave the Millers the opportunity to purchase the farm.

In 2018, Emanuel’s dreams came true as he purchased the 100 acre fruit and vegetable farm. He could finally give his children the same upbringing he had. He explains, “There’s nothing like spending time on a farm. It shaped my entire childhood. I remember being 8 years old and could barely reach the pedals to help drive the horses and plow the fields. The feeling of being in the field on a beautiful spring or summer day is unmatched. It’s good for the soul, and I want my children and our customers to experience it all the same way I did, without distraction from technology and busyness.”

The farm is a sanctuary for not only the Miller Family, but for all who visit. Moreland Fruit Farm is the perfect place to unplug, unwind, connect with nature, and create memories. Children don’t remember every gift they receive, but they do remember experiences with friends and family on the farm. Moreland Fruit Farm has something for everyone, from pick your own berries, peaches, and apples to a petting zoo, festivals, fresh fruit and vegetable selections, greenhouses, flowers, and more.

Since taking over, the Millers have poured their heart and soul into the farm, recently expanding the flower selection and renovating the greenhouse to a whopping 7,000 square feet. The added capacity means thousands of hanging baskets, annuals, perennials, and more. When asked about the improvements, Emanuel smiled and said, “We’re just getting started. We’ve come a long way, but what we have planned for the future is even better. We will continue to grow and provide the best products and a place for families to make memories together.”
