A Risk Worth Taking
When Nate Purdy started his first full time job after graduating from BGSU in 1988, he never anticipated it leading to a successful real estate career. He sold building components to local contractor supply yards in 5 states and then was recruited by one of his own customers in Akron, Ohio to run their family owned supply yard. Nate was then recruited to a Columbus drywall yard, with the expectation to increase productivity and profit margins within 12 months.
By applying his experience in management and infrastructure, Nate accomplished this task in six months. He never anticipated that his efficiency would make him obsolete. After the unforeseen job loss, and a golf vacation already planned, Nate knew he had to gain employment immediately. Nate contacted an agent from RE/MAX North Realty who had impressed him with his knowledge and sales acumen. With no experience in real estate, he was advised to take the required classes and obtain his license. Within 3 weeks Nate took all the classes, went on his vacation to Myrtle Beach, returned to take his test, and received his license on April 12, 1998.

Within 3 weeks Nate took all the classes, went on his vacation to Myrtle Beach, returned to take his test, and received his license on April 12, 1998. When Nate sold his first home in June, 1998 he knew he had finally found the right career. Within his first year as a REALTOR, Nate sold over 50 homes. In 1999, he moved to sunny Mansfield and continued working at the local RE/ MAX. In 2009, the local RE/MAX office closed. Judy Runion, a long time RE/ MAX agent, suggested Nate open a new RE/MAX office under his leadership. 2011 was arguably the absolute worst time to open a new real estate brokerage: the economy had been in decline for a while, GM just left town, and the real estate market had taken several hard hits. Knowing that opening a new brokerage was a colossal risk, Nate called his former broker in Columbus, as well as a few other brokers for advice. Every single person he talked to advised him against it, but Nate had a gut feeling that this was a risk worth taking. With raw emotion, Nate recounts the sacrifices he made, “I sold my 1966 Pontiac Convertible. The car was something I had wanted my whole life, but I knew selling it was the only way.” Nate gave up more than a car, “I asked my friends and family to borrow the remaining money to open the franchise.

I it was hard to ask other people to believe in me, it was the biggest risk I have ever taken. I could have lost everything.” “I asked my wife Lisa for her blessing before I signed the documents that would solidify the deal, and she wholeheartedly said, “I believe in you!”.
It was a risk that paid off. Opening the doors on January 1, 2012, RE/MAX First Realty, has grown and continues to grow. Nate attributes the success of RE/MAX First Realty to the 11 agents who are part of today’s team. The RE/MAX First agents are true professionals who bring a vast degree of real estate knowledge to their customers.” Nate could not have imagined how much his business would increase since that day. From taking a giant leap with only two agents, he now has 11 agents and is one the top five real estate companies in town.
